Modern Oasis

Providing elegance and a sense of wonder within a functional plan for a busy family of four, this modern home was envisioned as a pavilion in the garden. View lines in the floor plans were carefully considered to thoughtfully compose the experience of the space; all rooms have a garden view.

The kitchen is completely open to the living space and deliberately screened from the dining room resulting in an ideal home for entertaining. Custom millwork, of carbonized bamboo, bookends the spacious kitchen and provides ample storage which includes a concealed pantry and a wine fridge. The cantilevered eat-in counter projects from the substantial island, offering a place to pull up a stool and chat with the cook.

Positioned at the centre of the home, the living room is encircled by the kitchen, terrace, stair, and upper hallway. Indoor and outdoor spaces bleed into one another. Floor to ceiling windows provide expansive views of the garden and pool and illuminate the interior. The sloped ceiling form gives a gentle dynamism to the internal volumes, while walnut floors ground the space. Linear concrete tile, with the character of board formed concrete, encases the fire place and reaches up to the ceiling, accentuating the scale of the room.

The offices were designed with large windows on both sides, permitting views through to the garden, and the street. Each of the four bedrooms has its own washroom, perfect for the teenage siblings, while the master bedroom features a spa-like ensuite with large format tile and a sleek free-standing tub.

The exterior material palette of stone, stucco, and wood blends harmoniously with the homes of the established neighbourhood. The mature maple tree was conserved and acts as a buffer between the vehicular and pedestrian approaches.
