Alta Vista Kitchen

Ottawa, Ontario

White lacquered cabinets provide a clean backdrop for Zebrawood millwork and a contrasting blue glass backsplash . The long centre drop ceiling, with its swooping end, connects the kitchen with the adjacent spaces while focusing attention and light on the central work island. Ceramic flooring was replaced with cork tiles. Deep and inaccessible cabinets were replaced with drawers and pull-out pantries maximizing storage capacity. A new window with fewer divisions provides a clearer view outside while being highly energy efficient.

The lighting was specifically designed to reduce glare and consists of indirect lighting at the ceiling bulkheads, under cabinet work surface lighting, hidden lighting in the cabinets and trimless down lights in the centre drop ceiling.

Environmental considerations played a big part in the design. The Zebrawood is FSC certified, the cork flooring is sustainably harvested, the glass tile is locally made, the quartz countertops have a 40% recycled content, and all light fixtures are energy efficient LED.
