Port Carling, Ontario
At 12,000 sq. ft., this building accommodates a wide range of recreational and cultural activities, and was sited to ensure it contributed to "life on main street" while still linking to other adjacent recreational buildings. The building reinterprets the Muskoka heritage context with its use of wood siding and galvalume roofing in a modern and refreshing way.
Designed through an interactive process with the community, construction techniques were selected to allow semi-skilled community labour to participate in the building process. The building achieves a 32% reduction in energy consumption relative to the Model National Energy Code for Buildings.
